“Officials have long planned to improve mobility on the bridge — formally the World War II Memorial Bridge — which spans nearly a half-mile on S.C. Highway 7 between the intersection of Interstate 26 and Cosgrove Avenue in North Charleston and the crossing of Sam Rittenberg Boulevard and Poston Road in West Ashley.”
“Things now seem to be picking up since Charleston Moves met informally with a S.C. Department of Transportation staff member months ago to discuss ways to make the commute safer. Those thoughts include possibly establishing a reversible lane, which has been done in other states like Georgia, but not yet in South Carolina, Zimmerman said.
Also being considered is a stand-alone bike and pedestrian bridge similar to the $22 million one planned farther south at the peninsula, also nearly a half-mile across.”

“According to Charleston County, the Better Northbridge study is currently being conducted. It's aimed at finding alternatives to improving safety for those crossing the bridge. The county says there will be a website presenting an alternative and will take public input this summer.
“When that public meeting goes live in the summer we are going to need the community to rally together and support these improvements," said Zimmerman.”
Charleston County’s ‘Better NorthBridge’ study looks to improve pedestrian access (The Post and Courier)
“Charleston-area government officials and bike and pedestrian activists are making progress with a study that seeks to ensure safer transportation across the Ashley River.
The Northbridge, which spans almost half a mile from Cosgrove Avenue in North Charleston to Sam Rittenberg Boulevard in West Ashley, has seen several fatalities over the years that have sparked calls for improved access for walkers and cyclists.
Charleston County has for the past year been working with several people to develop a conceptual design for a 14-foot-wide pedestrian bridge that would run parallel to the Northbridge — formally the World War II Memorial Bridge on S.C. Highway 7 — providing people a safer alternative for walking and biking over the waterway.”
