Formally the World War II Memorial Bridge, the Northbridge spans the almost half mile distance along S.C. Highway 7 over the Ashley River connecting North Charleston and West Ashley.
The purpose of the Better Northbridge is to provide a safer alternative for walking and biking over the Ashley River enhancing connectivity between the communities of North Charleston and West Ashley. The Better Northbridge project is currently in the study phase.
Project Status:
The project team has been exploring funding opportunities to progress towards full design of the Better Northbridge project. On January 30, 2025, the project team submitted an application to the USDOT for a RAISE planning grant; however, the project was not selected for funding for Fiscal Year 2025. Next steps beyond that will be determined by Council action.
